At what temp does milk spoil?
There is no specific temperature that causes milk to spoil. Milk is a very flexible, stable food product. Milk can be heated safely and enjoyed in hot chocolate or lattes. It can be frozen and enjoyed in milk shakes and ice cream. Milk can be overheated and burned (just like any other food) but heating milk to a specific temperature does not cause it to spoil.
How long is milk good after it’s been opened (stored at 40F)?
We recommended you consume all open dairy products within 7 days of opening. Once opened, milk is exposed to air, which can cause the naturally-occurring bacteria to multiply. This is true for any natural product. For example, once you cut open an apple, it begins to brown almost immediately. It’s the same principle with milk (albeit much slower).
How long can milk be left out of the refrigerator?
It is generally perfectly safe to leave milk out, unrefrigerated, at mealtime and other occasions. Unless left out in excessive heat or for a prolonged period of time, milk can be put back in the refrigerator and will be safe to consume. If you are ever concerned about spoilage, you can check to see if your milk has spoiled by smelling, looking at, and tasting a small amount.
